Actively Supporting Parents with Infants to Re-engage in Education

The ASPIRE programme is an educational program designed to support young Mums and pregnant girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years to successfully complete their Queensland Certificate of Education at the end of year 12. The program came about due to a need being seen not only within the Deception Bay community but also within the district for to return to school with support.

Our programme is a full-time one so the young mums are required to attend school every day.

The ASPIRE programme has the young mums studying English, Maths, a Certificate III  in Early Childhood Education and Care, 2 electives and support tutorials. All new enrolments are required to carry out a Literacy and Numeracy test as well so that we can see that they are placed in the appropriate classes e.g. Communication or Authority English. Also each of the girls will have individual support plans that have been developed by their Case Manager so as to best support them in their journey to re-engage with education.

Whilst the young mums are studying their infants are placed in our adjunct care facility nearby on the school grounds. This will enable the young mums to provide care for their child when needed. The young mums will also have access to social workers, legal and health care professionals to support their transition back in to mainstream education.
