​​​​​A student's school life is much more rewarding if they become involved in other activities outside regular timetabled classes. These extra-curricular activities at Deception Bay SHS include activities in sport, performing arts, languages and student leadership. These activities are geared towards not only extending and engaging all students, but also helping enhance their leadership skills, organisational skills, sense of social responsibility and intellectual ability.

Aims:

  • Encourage students to reach their full potential.
  • Create a supportive and safe environment.
  • Fostering the Habits of Mind of a successful person such as persisting, thinking flexibly, taking responsible risks, managing impulsivity, creating, imagining, innovating, thinking interdependently and remaining open to continuous learning.
  • Foster and promote student confidence and skills.
  • Develop and offer quality co-curricular programs, which enhance the curriculum.
  • Promote meaningful relationships within the school community and in the wider community.

  • 'Pay it Forward’ projects

School service/extra curricular programs

School Service activities provide students with an opportunity to add value to the school.

These activities include:

Concert Band Captain, Officiating, set-up, First- Aid for Inter-School Carnival, Lions Youth of the Year, Ballycara Public Speaking Competition, Transition Day Volunteers, LOTE event helpers, Swimming/ Cross Country/ Athletics Day event helpers, SRC (Student Representative Council), D’Bay Way-Di-O, Moreton Bay Regional Maths Competition, Yearbook Team, ICAS Science Competition, Science & Engineering Challenge, Australian Maths Competition,  QUT Business Competition, Reading Group, Valentines Day Fundraising, Moreton Bay Regional Art Awards, Australian History Competition, SWPB /SRC/ SPORT Performances on Assembly, SRC Careers Day, Peer Support Mentors, Dance Captains, Spelling Bee, MADD Feast, Hospitality Events.

Sport

Interschool sport

All students are given the opportunity to participate in Interschool Sport. Students who choose not to participate are placed into a tutorial where they can catch up on their school work or a recreational sport group.

Representative sport

All students are given the opportunity for selection in District or Regional teams through participation in the school’s annual Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnival. In addition, students can also trial for selection in District or Regional teams across a wide variety of sporting pursuits. Our school also participates in some state-wide sporting competitions such as the Golden Glove Softball competition, Soccer and Futsal.

Performing A​rts

Senior & Junior dance troupes

Senior and Junior Dance Troupes rehearse once a week building a repertoire in a variety of styles for public and school performances. Students have opportunities to take on leadership roles in contributing their own choreography for the groups.  Participation in Dance Troupe benefits students’ fitness, confidence, discipline, interpersonal skills, creativity and persistence.

Marching drums

Marching Drums is a dynamic percussion ensemble featuring snares, quads and bass drums. Students learn technically advanced repertoire as well as creating their own pieces featuring complex choreographed movements.

Concert band

The Concert Band rehearses twice a week and performs weekly on assembly, at school functions, competitions and throughout the community.

Drama troupe

Budding actors are given ample opportunities to hone their Thespian skills in the Deception Bay SHS Drama Troupe. These actors take on the lead roles in MADDFest and perform a variety of pieces for a variety of audiences.​

MADD fest

MADD (Music, Art, Drama, Dance) Fest is a unique Deception Bay SHS production incorporating music, art, dance and drama. This is a biennial event on our school calendar and includes a MADDFeast performance where audience members enjoy the show while tucking in to a delicious 3 course meal prepared and served by our very own Hospitality students.

Performing Arts tour

In 2015 our school Performing Arts students took their talents on the road to showcase their skills on a tour of the Gold Coast.  This is now a biennial event (alternate year to MADD Fest) on our school calendar.

Religious instruction is not currently offered at this school.
