The Japanese program at Deception Bay SHS began in 2009 and has become an integral part of the school's curriculum. Since 2009 DBSHS has taken two study tours of students to Japan (in 2013 and 2017) and has hosted more than 10 groups of visiting Japanese students.
The advantages of studying a second language are endless. Students are encouraged to practice higher order thinking skills, become more culturally aware and to reflect on their own learning. These are transferable skills that will assist students in all other subject areas.
Japanese is available to all students to study as a term elective in Year 7. Students are then given the opportunity to choose Japanese as an elective in Year 8 for one semester and in Year 9 for the whole year.
In Year 7 students explore the language and culture of Japan:
- Introduction to Japanese culture
- Greetings and self-introductions
Assessment is a multi-modal video including written and oral (spoken) presentation of their self-introduction.
In Year 8 students explore the language and culture of Japan through the following topics:
- Families and friends
- Linguistic scripts – Japanese hiragana alphabet
- Writing in Japanese using phonetic alphabet with a basic introduction to the pictorial characters
- Comparing and contrasting aspects of Japanese culture with Australian culture and that of other countries
- Meeting and greeting – formal verse informal styles
- Descriptive language and expansion of vocabulary
Assessment involves written, oral (spoken) and listening activities
Students are also given the opportunity to put their new language skills and cultural awareness into practice at a local Japanese restaurant.
In Year 9 students continue to expand their knowledge of the language and culture of Japan:
- Further development of vocabulary
- Expansion of focus on various Japanese alphabets (katakana alphabet)
- Investigating Japanese history and the links it has with Australia
- Developing more complicated sentence structure and communication skills
Assessment involves written, oral (spoken), reading comprehension and listening activities.
Where possible guest speakers and workshop presenters will be accessed to enable students to refine their language skills and deepen their cultural awareness
