Cultural days of significance

Close the Gap Day

Oxfam’s National Close the Gap Day External link is held to remind Australian leaders of the importance of closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day, held on 26 May each year, commemorates and remembers all those whose lives have been affected by government policies of forcible removal. National Sorry Day External link events are held across Australia.

Mabo Day

Mabo Day External link celebrations are held on 3 June each year. The day celebrates the historic High Court judgement which upheld Eddie Mabo's claim that Murray Islanders held native title to land in the Torres Strait. 

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week External link celebrations highlight the rich and diverse culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the First Australians. NAIDOC Week celebrations and community events are a great opportunity for all Australians to come together and acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In 2024 NAIDOC Week will be held from 7–14 July celebrating this year's theme, Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud External link.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The start and end dates commemorate 2 significant milestones in Australian history—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. Each year the Queensland Government holds Reconcilation Awards External link, along with many other community activities, to foster reconciliation.

National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day

The National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day External link celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and reinforces their connection to their own culture and history.
