Cultural days of significance

10th Anniversary of the Apology

2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the formal apology made on 13 February 2008 by the government and the Parliament of Australia to Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, in particular, to the Stolen Generations.

Reading for reconciliation

Join Reading for Reconciliation, a book club dedicated to reading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors. Members meet at the Brisbane City Council's Brisbane Square Library.

Indigenous Knowledge Centre events

kuril dhagun, the Indigenous knowledge Centre at the State Library of Queensland hosts a variety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and cultural events. There are a number of Indigenous Knowledge Centres throughout Queensland.

Indigenous Literacy Day

Coordinated by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Indigenous Literacy Day, held on Wednesday 5 September 2018, aims to help raise funds to raise literacy levels and improve the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Australians living in remote and isolated regions. The Foundation together with community support helps raise funds to buy books and literacy resources for children in these communities.

Cairns Indigenous art fair

The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) is a major annual event, held on 13–15 July 2018, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to tell their stories through visual arts, performance, theatre, fashion and much more.

Palm Island Centenary celebrations

The Palm Island Centenary Celebration relates to the 100 years of Palm Island’s establishment. The centenary provides an opportunity to commemorate the past 100 years, and to celebrate a new future for the Palm Island community.

Close the Gap Day

Oxfam’s National Close the Gap Day is held to remind Australian leaders of the importance of closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day, held on 26 May each year, commemorates and remembers all those whose lives have been affected by government policies of forcible removal. National Sorry Day events are held across Australia.

Mabo Day

Mabo Day celebrations are held on 3 June each year. The day celebrates the historic High Court judgement which upheld Eddie Mabo's claim that Murray Islanders held native title to land in the Torres Strait. 


NAIDOC Week celebrations highlight the rich and diverse culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the First Australians. NAIDOC Week celebrations and community events are a great opportunity for all Australians to come together and acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In 2018 NAIDOC Week will be held from 8–15 July and the theme will be Because of her, we can! 

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The start and end dates commemorate 2 significant milestones in Australian history—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. Each year the Queensland Government holds Reconcilation Awards, along with many other community activities, to foster reconciliation.

National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day

The National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and reinforces their connection to their own culture and history.

Gab Titui Cultural Centre events

Gab Titui Cultural Centre, located on Thursday Island, holds art exhibitions and art awards as well as cultural events.

KickArts Contemporary Arts

KickArts Contemporary Arts, located in the Centre of Contemporary Arts in Cairns, has a fantastic program of exhibitions, workshops and events.
