INCLUSION We embrace diversity and ensure every student receives the support needed to engage purposefully in learning.

Deception Bay State High School commits to continuing our journey towards inclusive education being part of our everyday practice and school culture. We have high expectations of all students, recognising that, with the right support, all students can succeed. For identified priority groups, a number of additional reasonable adjustments and support are in place. Our commitment means that young people in our community, from all social, cultural, and family backgrounds, and of all identities and all abilities are able to be the best they can be.

POSITIVE EDUCATION We foster wellbeing and the development of character so that students can be a lifelong thriving learner.

We understand that for students to thrive in their learning, in their relationships and in life, then we are responsible for building a supportive environment where students feel supported, safe and where they feel that they belong. Positive Education at Deception Bay State High school is evident in the junior school Learning for Life curriculum. There, students learn and embed the features of the evidence based PERMA model as well as self-regulation strategies. We teach Character Strengths along with essay skills to junior students in Virtue program. Wellbeing and belonging of all students is an important feature of our daily practice. We understand that when students are able to feel well and do well, then they will be engaged and more likely to be successful at school.

LEARNING We create a learning culture that engages learners, encourages curiosity and critical thinking.

The aim of the Deception Bay SHS Learning Plan is to create a learning culture that engages learners and encourages curiosity to improve student achievement. This aim underpins all school planning and teaching to ensure every student receives the support needed to engage purposefully in learning and experience academic success. This has been achieved through systematic curriculum delivery, data analysis and the Deception Bay SHS Pedagogical Toolbox.

OPTIONS

It is of paramount importance that our students leave our school with options.  Deception Bay State High School provides students with a wide variety of options for their pathways beyond school.  Whether a student wishes to complete tertiary studies after high school through obtaining an Australian Tertiary Admissions Ran (ATAR) or Vocational Education and Training (VET), enter the workforce or join the police force or ADF, we pride ourselves in guiding students through their options.

Our school provides subject selection alternatives that allow them to complete General subjects (which contribute to an ATAR) or applied subjects.  As a Registered Training Organisation, we also offer one of the largest number of VET qualifications in all of Queensland State schools.  Partnerships with the ADF and employment providers also enable us to connect students with school-based traineeships or apprenticeships.

When students leave Deception Bay State High School, they have been afforded the opportunity to leave as qualified young adults with a range of options before them.
