Subject Overviews

Middle Phase HPE

The middle phase HPE program at Deception Bay State High school runs from years 7 to 9. It has a primary focus on healthy lifestyles through participation in sport, fitness and training, yet still tackles some of the harder health related issues of relationships, drugs and alcohol, and decision making beyond the moment.

Senior Phase of HPE

Physical Education

Physical Education focuses on physical activity in Australian society and involves learning in, through and about physical activity.  Students will be assessed on criteria in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course.  The theory units studied relate directly to the selected physical activity the students are participating in.

Certificate II/III in Health Support Services
This Certificate Course will provide students with the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to enter the Health Services industry as a support worker upon graduating from school.  Students will learn through a range of assessment tools including but not limited to: observation, written assessment, portfolios, questioning, work samples, third-party feedback, role play scenarios, individual and group work, presentations, and practical experiences.

This course engages students in competencies that best prepare them for working in the Health Support Industry, and explores the importance of communication and working in Health or Community Services.  This course is designed to be completed in Years 10 and 11, with the intention of continuing with a Certificate III in Health Support Services, which will then allow students to graduate as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN).

Health

Health provides students with a contextualised strengths-based inquiry of the various determinants that create and promote lifelong health, learning and active citizenship. Drawing from the health, behavioural, social and physical sciences, the Health syllabus offers students an action, advocacy and evaluation-oriented curriculum.

Health uses an inquiry approach informed by the critical analysis of health information to investigate sustainable health change at personal, peer, family and community levels. Students define and understand broad health topics, which they reframe into specific contextualised health issues for further investigation. Students plan, implement, evaluate and reflect on action strategies that mediate, enable and advocate change through health promotion.

Sport and Recreation

Sport & Recreation provides students with opportunities to learn in, through and about sport and active recreation activities, examining their role in the lives of individuals and communities.

Students examine the relevance of sport and active recreation in Australian culture, employment growth, health and wellbeing. They consider factors that influence participation in sport and recreation, and how physical skills can enhance participation and performance in sport and recreation activities. Students explore how interpersonal skills support effective interaction with others, and the promotion of safety in sport and recreation activities. They examine technology in sport and recreation activities, and how the sport and recreation industry contributes to individual and community outcomes.

Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30315)

This qualification is delivered exclusively by Deception Bay State High staff, with the school being the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for the qualification. In setting it up this way, we can offer this qualification to the student at no cost, making us one of only a handful of schools in Queensland able to do so. The HPE Department permanently employs a certified Fitness Instructor to assist in delivering this certificate who is currently working in industry.  This investment aims to ensure the program maintains high standards and gives students real world insight into the current and emerging changes in Fitness.
