VISUAL ARTS:

Arts education helps develop, foster and apply many 21st century skills such as critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration and team-work, personal, social and ICT skills. Visual Arts at Deception Bay State High School involves practical, critical and creative approaches in two specialised art streams; visual art and film and media. The curriculum examines past, current and emerging arts practices in each art form across a range of cultural, social and personal perspectives. Both visual art and film and media studies are hands on subjects with theory components to reinforce the practical elements being studied. Film and media studies requires students to work in small groups for some projects and helps students develop essential and transferrable skills in communication and collaboration.

INCLUSION:

Inclusion encompasses First Nations students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, and students of Maori and Pasifika descent. Our goal is to close the gap in educational outcomes and opportunities for First Nations, Maori and Pasifika students by providing a variety of support in and out of the classroom and creating a learning environment that is culturally safe and welcoming.

We celebrate cultural diversity through craft activities, song and dance and acknowledge significant cultural dates. Our Inclusion Team engage with community organisations and programs that assist our students to develop skills for success throughout life in areas of health, well-being and future pathways. We encourage family and community participation to help make activities for students culturally relevant and authentic. If you would like to share your cultural knowledge and practice please contact one of the Inclusion Team.
