Mathematics is an integral part of a general education. It can enhance understanding of our world and the quality of our participation in a rapidly changing society. Mathematics pervades so many aspects of daily life that a sound knowledge is essential for informed citizenship. Through a deep understanding of mathematics, individuals can learn about economics, society and politics in a mathematically oriented society.
The emphasis of the course is to teach students how to ‘work like a mathematician’. Students engage with problems and investigations using concrete materials and the tools of the mathematician - calculators; measuring equipment; statistics; along with numeric, geometric and algebraic understandings. Students are then required to communicate their mathematics in writing as a report or assignment.
From Year 10 Semester 1 we offer our Senior Curriculum for mathematics. The course cover the same objectives a the Senior Syllabus with the classes investigating more complex applications of those topics relevant to the chosen mathematic subject.
